Interior design ideas to make your house modern and stylish

At one point in time, we all have stalked celebrity homes online, seeing them in awe, wishing our homes could exude same elegance and décor. Well, celebrities usually have deep pockets and spend generously on keeping up a great lifestyle. In fact, did you know that some of the celebrities are also interior designers themselves? Cindy Crawford, for example, is not just one of the famous supermodels in the world but also owns her own furniture business by the name Cindy Crawford Home.

However, we the ordinary people usually don’t have that much to spend on our homes, but that does not mean that we cannot decorate whatever little space that we have. Martyn Lawrence Bullard, one of the best interior designers in the world who has designed Jimmy Choo stores worldwide says: “Modern luxury to me means comfort. It doesn’t mean how big your home is, how many rooms you have or how much money you spend on your interiors, furnishings, and art. It’s all about how comfortable you make it. We all work so hard in lives, so our homes must be our sanctuaries: places to relax, rejuvenate and re-center ourselves.”

So, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to interior designing; everybody has their own preferences and ideas of comfort. However, here are some ideas that you can use to make your home look more stylish and modern:

1. Get rid of the clutter

The one common thing in most of the high-end homes is that they are not cluttered, which means everything that there is in the home has some utility and has been kept after much thought. So, don’t just cramp up your home with extra furniture that does not fit. Especially, if you have a smallerspace, then you can use foldable multipurpose furniture such as sofa cum bed or foldable tables so that you can enough space to fit in your guests. To keep your home clutter-free, always keep stuff that you really need and use; get rid of anything that you haven’t used in six months. In this way, you will need less storage space.

2. Color Matters

Choose the right colors for your place that go with your personality. It would be better if you select a theme for your home. Random colors in every room just don’t give the house a good look. You can use contrasting colors, for example, light colors on three walls and bold dark color on one wall. However, if your space is small, then it would be better to use light hues. Light colors reflect light and hence make space look airy and open. Dark colors, on the other hand, absorb light and give a suffocating feeling in a small space.

3. Let the light in

Try to let in a much natural light as possible as natural light makes a room look airy and open. Try to have large windows. However, if that is not possible, then you can use some tricks to lighten up your place. First, ditch heavy fabric and dark colored curtains; use light fabric and try to use translucent colors that spread light all across the room. You can also creatively use mirrors to increase light in your place. Put up a large sized mirror in front of the largest window, and it will reflect light. Also, when painting your walls, keep in mind that glossy walls create glare. Hence, you should opt for matte as it reflects light in every direction.

4. Let out that artist

One of the common things in most of the luxurious homes is good art. While good art can itself be quite expensive, it does not mean that you cannot put up some regular art that adds a touch of elegance to your place. The best idea perhaps is to go opt for abstract art as it adds a touch of vibrancy and a new color to your walls. You can also use a contrasting color with your walls and furniture. If you have a huge wall, then you can also select small art pieces and put them up together instead of buying one large piece of painting.

Apart from paintings, you can also put up your photographs on the walls. It is also budget friendly and keeps reminding you of your precious moments. You can buy some stylish frames of different sizes and put up a collage on your wall.

5. Use hardwood

Often people opt for carpeted floors. While they do give a sense of warmth and comfort, hardwood adds elegance to the place and is not quite expensive as well. Hardwood is a great investment since it lasts for a longer period and also adds value to your home in case you decide to resale it. When you select the hardwood, you will have different options of wood to choose from. Some are more expensive than others. For example, Cherry is more expensive than Birch and Oak.

6. Add plants

One of the latest interior designs trends these days is the addition of plants in the home. You can keep one on either side of your sofa or TV, or you can keep one big plant in a corner. However, do check the sunlight and water requirement of the plant before you decide on a spot. There are basically a lot of small things that you can do to give a modern look to your home, and you can always stalk the celebrities for inspiration. However, the most important thing is that you should keep your stuff to a minimum, the less the clutter, the more space you will have to be creative and relax. You have to keep your house clean and bugproof first, and then you can work on the accessories. Your house is sort of a personal statement, make sure that you make a first good impression on your guests
